Smellovision 1965

It ain't foolish to believe this April Fool's Day prank!

On April Fool's Day 2022 we told you that there is a new technology using soundwaves to enable you to smell scents from just listening to an Audiobook.
While this technology really enables you to feel weird at least, sadly it doesn’t make you smell scents from Audiobooks - at least not by now ;-)

Did you know that already in 1965 the BBC did an April Fools day prank involving scents to their audience? They interviewed a professor from London University who told them about a technology he called “Smellovision”. This technology should allow viewers to smell aromas which were produced in the TV studios in their homes. They even did a demonstration!

The professor placed coffee beans and onions into the “Smellovision” machine and asked viewers to report if they were able to smell anything. And in fact people called and confirmed they would have experienced the scents in their homes. Some even said that the onions made their eyes water!

This experiment was repeated in 1977. Bristol University psychology lecturer Michael O’Mahony was interested in the effect of the power of suggestion on smell. So he told viewers of a late-night news show that a new technology would allow the TV station to transmit smells. He told the viewers that he was going to transmit a “pleasant country smell, not manure” and asked people to report what they smelled. He received 172 responses. Most people said they smelled hay or grass, others said they smelled flowers, lavender, fruits, potatoes and even homemade bread. 2 people even complained about severe hay fever!

We think that this is stunning! Alone talking about scents or awaiting scents makes your brain experience scents!

If you think about it you truly realise how powerful scents and the connection of scents with our emotions and memories are. People thought of “pleasant country smell” and expected to smell it and then they really thought they could smell those things that are connected in their brains with that notion. For most people it was grass and hay, for others flowers.

We know how powerful our sense of smell is and we also know how important this connection of scents with memories and emotions is. That’s why we’re so dedicated to create unique experiences by using the combination of stories and scents matching the storyline. This will spark emotions and memories and create long-lasting relaxation.
